Biography
"Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funky." That's the motto of Dutch soul jazz/funk group Euro Cinema. The group's raw jazz funk sound is rooted in late 60s organ funk as well as the anonymous "library music" soundtracks to 70s movies. Hence the name! Euro Cinema consists Tim den Heijer (guitar), Niels Piay (drums), Dennis Orsel (bass) and Rob Schepens (Hammond organ).
The track Euro Boogaloo off the first demo was picked up on Myspace by influential DJs including Maestro (Blue Note records) and Craig Charles (BBC6 Soul and Funk show), who called their sound "a very nice line in soul jazz." The group started gigging on a regular basis in Dutch jazz/funk clubs and quickly acquired a reputation for their energetic live shows. In july 2010 Euro Cinema had the honor of opening the prestigious Saint Paul Soul Jazz Festival in France.
Euro Cinema began recording tracks with producer Phil Martin (Soul Snatchers, Jazzinvaders, Laura Vane and the Vipertones). Shortly after, the band signed with the renowned American label Hammondbeat Records. The single Brooklyn Groove/Brother Lou was released on limited edition vinyl. The single got airplay on Radio6 (Netherlands) and BBC6, but also in the U.S. and Canada.
In march 2011, the full length album "Ten-4!" is released. The title is 70's B-movie slang, but also stands for the philosophy behind the album: ten original tracks by the four band members, without guests, remixes or cover versions. Euro Cinema performs wherever people come to dance to jazz and funk: venues such SJU, DJS, Bitterzoet, Badcuyp, festivals like Jazz in Duketown, IJazz, Jazzfestival Delft and Jazz-A-Palooza and party's like Blue Note Trip, Naald & Kraak and Supernatural.
